Technology Showcase Series
Technology and Teaching Showcase Series 2008-2009
Co-sponsored with the UMW Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning
and the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies (DTLT)
Program Overview:
During the fall and spring semesters, members of the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies (DTLT) will present one seminar on a particular instructional technology or pedagogy and facilitate conversation about it. Each seminar will be followed with an opportunity for more in-depth study by a small group of faculty who wish to explore that technology or pedagogy for use in a particular class or assignment. Up to three faculty members can participate in these Faculty IT Partnerships that will be awarded each semester. Faculty who apply for and are awarded one of the Faculty IT Partnerships will work with the Instructional Technology Specialists to define, develop and implement a specific project utilizing the new technologies and techniques. Limited funding is available to support software or hardware needed to complete the projects. Faculty will be expected to engage in online discussion of their work through a blog, the TeachUMW web site, or other media. At the end of the academic year, these projects will be presented by the participating faculty at DTLT’s annual Faculty Academy for Teaching and Learning Technologies conference held in May.
Seminar Overview:
The same seminar will be offered twice during the semester – once on each campus. DTLT staff will begin the seminar by defining the topic, presenting some background information on the chosen technology or pedagogy, and offering some discussion questions. This will be followed by a general discussion of the topic among those attending. As the program matures, we envision faculty co-presenting or leading these seminars with assistance from DTLT staff.
Faculty IT Partnerships:
At the conclusion of the seminar, interested faculty will have the opportunity to put their ideas into action. Any faculty interested in developing a project using the technology or pedagogy presented is invited to apply for one of three Faculty IT Partnerships. Deadline for application is 7 days following the seminar presentation. Factors that will be considered in selecting faculty partners under this program will be:
- At least one Faculty IT Partnership per campus, if interested.
- Faculty willingness to document their development process online and to present at Faculty Academy.
- A short proposal describing the project. Proposals will be evaluated by DTLT staff as well as the Teaching Center Advisory Committee with three Faculty IT Partnerships awarded each semester.
