In this issue of the DTLT newsletter we bring you Faculty Academy news, links to two new DTLT sites of interest, and information about upcoming NITLE and NMC events.

Faculty Academy 2009: The (Un)Common University

We're pleased to announce that we've finalized arrangements with our visiting speakers for Faculty Academy and launched this year's conference Web site at www.facultyacademy.org. On Wednesday, May 13th, James Boyle of Duke University will be delivering our keynote address at 11 am. The title of his presentation is forthcoming; in the meantime, we invite you to read more about Dr. Boyle and his work with intellectual property law, the Center for the Public Domain, and Creative Commons: www.facultyacademy.org/blog09/2009/03/james-boyle/.

In addition, Cole Camplese of Pennsylvania State University and Laura Blankenship of Emerging Technologies Consulting will be attending Faculty Academy this year in the roles of guest presenters and workshop leaders. We're pleased to welcome Cole, who is currently Director of Education Technology Services at Penn State to the conference for the first time, and we're also delighted to be inviting Laura, who has attended several Faculty Academies in the past, back in this featured role. Additional information about both of our guest presenters is available on the conference site.

Please take some time to browse the site and learn more about two of our featured events:

  • A debate about the state of course management systems between Jim Groom of DTLT and John St. Clair, director of distance and blended learning and
  • The second annual "Deck Wars" competition.

Finally, we'd like to point out in particular that we'll be arranging an informal reading group of James Boyle's recently published The Public Domain: Enclosing the Commons of the Mind prior to the conference. You can sign up to participate in the group on the conference site.

When you visit the site, you'll find we have a variety of channels available for subscribing to receive updates about conference news, including announcements when registration and the call for proposal are open.

And, of course, make sure to mark your calendars for May 13 and 14!

Two New DTLT Web Sites

Folks in DTLT have been working on two new Web offerings which we'd like to bring to your attention. First, Andy Rush, New Media Specialist, recently launched the "Digital Media Cookbook" (www.digitalmediacookbook.com/) a site that will regularly offer "recipes" for working with digital media. Currently you can find information about subscribing to podcasts, embedding YouTube videos in PowerPoint, and and compressing images in PowerPoint to save valuable space. We invite you to take a look at this site and check it regularly for new offerings.

In addition, DTLT's two student aides, Shannon Hauser and Serena Epstein, are now regularly adding content to a new site we launched in January: "Stuff for Starving Students." The site's purpose is to highlight new technologies and tools which might be of particular interest to college students. We encourage you to take a look and point your students towards this new resource: http://stuffforstarvingstudents.umwblogs.org.

Upcoming NMC Symposium on New Media and Learning: Online and Complimentary!

On March 24-27, the New Media Consortium will be hosting the thirteenth in its Series of Virtual Symposia, which will explore the impact of new media on teaching, learning, research, and creative expression, especially in higher education. Guest speaker Erick Hackathorn will be presenting on how the government is making use of social software and new media and Nettrice R. Gaskins, Lori Landay, and Sharon Dunn will be speaking about "Digital Transformations and Conversions in Art--Web 2.0 and Beyond." In addition there will be numerous conference sessions on new media and learning.

This event is held entirely on-line and, as a members of the NMC, UMW receives several complimentary registrations to this symposium. If you're interested in participating, please contact Martha Burtis (mburtis@umw.edu) as soon as possible.

You can find more information about the event at www.nmc.org/2009-nml-symposium
